Lyrics Analysis - Miss Miller**

My group and I were given the task to analyse the lyrics of our chosen song, wings by Birdy. The purpose of analysis the lyrics were so that we could understand what the actual song was about and also figure out the hidden meanings or messages the artist is trying to put across. Also, analysing the lyrics for our chosen song will prompt us with ideas for our music video, as our analysis will tell us what each line means and how it portrays a certain image across. By analysing the lyrics for our song, this demonstrates certain planning techniques such as what mise en scene were going to include e.g low key lighting to accompany lyrics that suggest darkness; editing styles such as fast editing or slow editing to convey the mood of the lyrics and so on. Therefore this task will be helpful when planning our music video, as it'll help us visualise the lyrics and give us ideas on what to include in our video. 

The way in which my group annotated the lyrics, was that we organised each lyric that we thought belonged to either hidden messages, artist representation, mise en scene/ style of music video and target audience relationship through the use of different coloured highlighting. Yellow was hidden messages (messages that are not clearly apparent but are there when thought into depth), Orange was artist representation (how the lyrics represent the artist in relation to their feelings and emotions), mes/style of video ( what elements on mise en scene and style of video could be seen for the lyric) was green and target audience relationship (the relationship between the artist and the audience) was blue. This was helpful as we colourfully distinguished which lyrics belonged to what. 

There are a few hidden messages and meanings within the lyrics for Wings. The first two lines of the song are "Sunlight comes creeping in, Illuminates our skin". What we got from these two lines was an impression that the artist is thinking about someone important to her. Sunlight connotes pleasant memories, beautiful days and happiness, which could portray the artist as looking back into her past that was quite happy. The "sunlight comes creeping in" lyric could symbolise her thought process as it lighting up and processing her memories with her lover, however the creeping in could suggest that this thought is sad and the slowness represents her as grieving slightly but still see's the relationship in a good light. Sunlight has some negative connotations, as it may be seen as blinding and creating shadows which could imply that through the happiness of the memories there were some dark times or it could suggest that the artist is sad that it's not the same anymore in terms of contentment. This hidden message shows that the artist is in a vulnerable state and is looking back at her past, which the audience may relate to as they too may have experienced love loss or just looking back at good times. In terms of cinematography, with these lyrics I think we will consider including a high angle shot of the artist looking at the photographs of her and her partner whilst sitting on the floor. I believe the use of this shot will mirror the lyrics and suggest how the artist is thinking about her partner and that the sunlight creeping in could symbolise the memories that they had are in her thoughts. This implies that the artist is still in love with her partner and cherishes their memories whether good or bad and misses them since they're creeping in. Also, Illuminates our skin could be seen through the camera shot, as the shot will show her only from a high angle and could portray her in the spotlight, illuminating herself and highlighting the fact that she is looking at pictures of her and her partner. 

The line "So far from where we are" has the hidden message of the artist and her partner not being as good as they was before in their relationship. This suggests that they're are on some sort of rough patch and the relationship is not functioning properly or being the way its suppose to be. This is conventional to the indie genre, as themes of rocky relationships that are not functioning properly or there is some kind of obstacle within one is usually used in an indie music video. This is because artist tend to sing about their life experiences and whats happened to them, and relationships on bad terms tends to be a common theme as the target audience can relate to it because they may have experienced a bad relationship before. Therefore, building a relationship between the artist and audience as they may have something in common when it comes to relationships that are on the rocks. In reference to the music video style, especially narrative based, the lyrics could accompany with our narrative on showing the negative sides of the relationship as the artist partner does not want to be public with their relationship. This could be done through showing the artists partner moving her hands away from the artists hands when they are in public, which implies that she is not comfortable with being intimate in public. This could symbolise the lyrics "So far from where we are" by visually showing in our music video how they are still not content with their relationship and how there are still obstacles the artist has to face in order to get to where they should be with her partner. Therefore, the lyrics could be applied to our music video in relation of showing the narrative of conflict in the artists relationship.

Another hidden message is evident in the chorus "Oh lights go down, In the moment we're lost and found". The hidden message that we got from these lines is that the relationship that the artist was in, it was exciting and functioning when they were not in the spotlight. We got the impression of the relationship that the artist was in was only intimate in the dark and how the relationship was in secret especially through the lines "we're lost and found". In addition, it implies that even though they are not sure on where they are at within their relationship, they are still committed and happy to be in it even if they are confused about it. The audience can relate to this hidden message of unsureness but gratification as the target audience of 17 - 25 year olds are stereotyped to think they know everything, but they don't as they're still young and experiencing things. In reference to editing, we will be considering having a montage seen in the first chorus to these lyrics which will show the artist and her partner inside a tent play fighting and being mildly intimate e.g touching hands and staring into each others eyes. The montage will follow Goodwin's theory of lyrics matching visuals, as the visuals will convey the lyrics by conveying them being lost and hidden away in the tent, but they are found because they are being themselves and intimate in secrecy. Therefore portraying the artist as submissive, and weak because she's following her partners instructions of only showing affection in secrecy when no one is with them. This helps build a relationship with the audience and the artist, as the audience will feel sympathy towards the artist for her being weak in the relationship and not being able to have what she truly wants, which is a relationship out in the open. 

The codes and convention of having a relationship theme in an indie music video is evident through the lyrics "It made me think of you, It made me think of you". The hidden message from this is that the artist is missing someone and whenever she's doing normal regular things she thinks about that one person. The repetition emphasises how much she misses that person and gives the impression that she wants things to be how they were then. The lyrics are conventional to the indie genre as they portray the artist as missing someone which is a common theme in the genre as artists usually sing about love loss or relationships because its something personal to them. This could represent the artist as being lonely which builds a relationship between her and the audience, because they may sympathise or emphasise with her and feel like they know how she feels. To covey the loneliness in our music video with this lyrics, we are considering having the artist singing alone in an isolated place e.g field, to show how she is alone. Also, it'll emphasise the way the artist is expressing her feelings of missing someone and letting her audience in to her personal issue. 
Another codes and convention that will be evident in our music video, is the artist singing with a guitar. This will be seen with the the lyrics "Oh lights go down" and will show the artist playing the instrument whilst singing. The use of having a guitar is conventional to the indie genre, as artists within this genre usually have an instrument to help express their feelings and emotions of the song. Also the instrument being visible in the music video will help show the audience that the artist is not only vocally talented, but also instrumentally therefore sharing more knowledge about the artist. The iconography of a guitar reflects the lyrics as they suggest she's in the spotlight even though the lights are going down, which gives her the focal attention because they just see her playing the guitar. Also, the use of this follows Goodwin's theory of having visuals matching music as the guitar sounds will be heard through the music and also give the impression that the artist is playing the guitar live. This creates a sense of realism for the audience, as the music and visuals match which portray the artist as being genuine and honest because they see her playing a guitar whilst hearing it in the background. 
The third codes and convention that'll be used in our music video is the use of having real life settings in our music video. The lyrics "Under a trillion stars, We danced on top of cars"  will show the setting of the bonfire event that the girls are at in the music video. This setting is conventional to the indie genre, as artists within in the genre often portray themselves at public places that the audience can relate to. Also, the lyrics "Under a trillion stars" is symbolised through the fireworks display that the couple witnesses at the event and the fireworks connote the stars as both stars and fireworks are bright. Therefore this follows Goodwin's theory of the lyrics and visuals matching as the fireworks are symbolic for stars and the couple are below them, which visually shows the lyrics. Therefore, the convention of having a real life setting within our music video is conventional to the genre, as it helps the audience and artist connect and build a relationship with each other as they may relate to whats going on or gives them better understanding of the narrative. For example, the bonfire event is a vibrant, lively and fun scene which could portray the relationship in the narrative as happy in this moment which shows that this is a happy memory that the artist has with her partner.

The annotation of lyrics will assist me and my group in planning editing, specifically the lyrics "We watch the day go by". The hidden message behind this lyric could be that the artist is thinking about the past of her relationship. Daytime connotes happiness, freeness and life because everything is alive at this time of day, which could imply that the thoughts of the relationship that the artist is having are happy. In reference to editing, to convey this lyric in our music video we will have a time lapse of the clouds moving in the sky. This will follow Goodwin's theory of visuals and lyrics matching as the audience will be seeing the day actually go by through the time lapse. The time lapse of the clouds moving in the sky will connote how time flies by and will show how the relationship within our relationship has gone quick. However, the time lapse of the clouds could symbolise the happiness and fun in the relationship because of the connotations of peace and purity which could imply that the relationship is not perfect but it is raw. 

Annotating the lyrics for the song wings, will assist me and my group in planning cinematography, specifically through the lyrics "We'd remember tonight, for the rest of our lives". The lyrics itself conveys the hidden message of how the artist and the person who she was close to will remember the intimacy or experiences that they had together for the rest of their lives. "for the rest of our lives"  could connote how deep the relationship was between the two as they are willing to remember the moment 'forever' which implies that the whole relationship was a profound love which they won't forget. The way we will convey this hidden message in our narrative is by showing the couple hold hands and then drift away each other.  The camera shot that will be evident when this lyric is heard is a close up shot, which will show the artist and her partners hands slowly parting away each other. The shot implies that the relationship has ended as well as the narrative in our video which leaves it in a cliff hanger that makes the audience question if they have or have not broken up. However, the fact that the shot will start with them holding hands will convey the lyrics of them being involved in a profound love but parting away because of the complicatedness it brings to their lives. But the couple still appreciate the relationship and will still care for each other, therefore they'd remember the moment 'for the rest of their lives'. Close up shots are conventional in the indie genre, as they help establish the artists facial expressions or give emphasis to an object for further understanding of the narrative or concept being portrayed. 

Mise en scene will be crucial for when planning and making our music video. The annotations for the lyric will help assist my group in planning mise en scene, firstly setting and iconography. The lyrics "My words are leaving me, they caught an aeroplane" give the impression that the artist is lost for words and is distraught by the negativity within their relationship that she no longer has nothing to say. The fact that she uses a metaphor that suggests her words have caught on aeroplane emphasises how effected she is by this, due to aeroplanes being far up in the sky. In relation to our narrative, we will convey the lyrics through setting and iconography which will be the artist in her bedroom looking at old letters and photographs from her partner. The setting of a bedroom will exaggerate her emotions of being upset, as bedrooms are known for being a place of privacy and where everyone can be themselves because its their own personal space. The use of this setting will emphasise the lyrics as it shows the artist as emotional whilst looking at the letters and photographs which creates sympathy from the audience. Also it may build a relationship with the audience as they can emphasise with her if they have been through the experience of being so hurt that you have no words to say. The iconography of letters and photographs help illustrate the lyrics by showing her reaction to these objects as being sad. Also, letters are seen as a personal mean of communication as it consists of ones handwriting or typing to another which makes it seem more confidential. The photographs are there to show the memories that the artist and her partner had which also makes her reaction to seeing them seem as she is heart broken, because photographs capture moments that we cherish forever. The use of the bedroom and iconography; letters and photographs are conventional to the indie genre because a bedroom is a recognisable place which the audience can relate to and the iconography used are seen as sentimental and personal because they are items that can be kept forever. Therefore, both are conventional to the indie genre as they convey the artist in her comfortable setting but also show her emotions which indie artists tend to do in their music videos when singing about their personal life experiences. 
The second mise en scene element that the lyrics analysis will assist us with planning, is costume, hair and make up. The lyric in which this element will be seen is "Because I thought of you, Just From the thought of you" . These lyrics accompany the hidden message of the artist missing someone and their relationship. The repetition of thought of you emphasises how much she misses them and represents the artist as being so in love with the person because she repeats the lyrics of thinking about the person in all three verses. In relation to our music video, the costume of our artist which consists of an off white dress, denim jacket, tights and boots convey the lyrics. The off white dress connotes purity and innocence which could portray the artist as these connotations but also apply to the lyrics as she is expressing how she feels and that her thoughts of her partner are pure. Also, the white dress represents her vulnerability in the scene and connects with the lyrics as she is vulnerable when thinking about her partner. In addition, the blue denim jacket has connotations of tranquility and calmness however this could be seen as putting a front on through the denim as the texture is tough. The toughness of the denim jacket could reflect the lyrics if her trying to be strong enough to get over her partner, however she cannot full complete this task hence why she is thinking of her. Also, the black tights could convey the lyrics as black connotes darkness which could imply that the artist is in a dark place, and the fact she's thinking about her partner could suggest that she's her saviour. Moving onto hair and makeup, the hair will be wavy which could refer to the lyrics as the artist being not her self. The waves could connote her inconsistency and unsureness with where she's at, however reflects the lyrics of her always being sure about her partner which further shows her love. Lastly, her make up will be neutral but not too basic for example having contoured face, lipstick and dark eyeshadow. This will reflect the lyrics as it'll imply that the artist makes an effort to look good for the partner, therefore suggests this as she is saying she is thinking about her whilst looking quite made up. This is conventional to the indie genre, as it portrays the artist as being weary about her appearance to impress someone, which the audience can relate to if they've done the same, therefore following realism.
Furthermore, the third mise en scene; lighting and colour will convey the lyrics that were mentioned before "Under a trillion stars". Stars connote big change or turning point in a persons life and hope, which could reflect the lyrics by suggesting the hidden message of the artist waiting for a big change and is being optimistic about it. In reference to our music video, the lyrics as said before will be seen through the sparklers and setting. However, mise en scene lighting and colour is also evident in this scene of the bonfire event. For instance, the bright colours of the sparklers and fireworks could convey the lyrics by suggesting the relationship between the artist and her partner is profound and exciting due to the brightness. Also, the fact that they're under the stars following Goodwin's theory of visuals and lyrics matching, could imply that the theres hope for the relationship because of it being complicated as one doesn't want to be open about it. Alongside, colours the lyrics assisted us with planning the lighting for the bonfire scene. The lighting will be low key lighting as this shows the natural lighting of night time and shows the artist in a real life setting. The low key lighting is applied to the lyrics by conveying the characters literally being under the stars due to it being night time. Also, it helps convey the narrative of their relationship being in secrecy as they are seen through the low key lighting acting like they are together, which shows them intimately under the stars which are the fireworks. Therefore, the colour and lighting picked conveys the lyrics and gives the audience further understanding of the relationship in the narrative. 
Lastly, planning mise en scene body language, facial expressions and positioning is evident through the lyrics analysis. The lyrics that helped us plan our body language is "If these wings could fly". The hidden message that we got from this lyric was that the artist feels conditional in the relationship that she is in, and wishes that it could be as wonderful if only they had the strength. We stemmed this idea from a bird not being able to fly and not have the strength to because their wings may be damaged and thought this could symbolise what the artist is trying to say. In relation to planning body language in our music video, we thought by having a shot of dancers expressing struggle through their dancing will convey the lyrics perfectly. Therefore, the body language will be of the ballerina dancers seen through a silhouette effect could portray our narrative of the struggling relationship. We felt that this was conventional to the indie genre as artist tend to use a performance to further express themselves using an instrument, however we are going to challenge this by having dancing instead of an instrument to showcase this. The lyrics "Oh damn these walls, in the moment were ten feet tall" helped us plan facial expressions and positioning. The lyrics have the hidden message of the artist being frustrated with the complications of the relationship, and expressing how when they're in a happy moment they are untouchable. This is seen through the phrase "in the moment were ten feet tall", which the metaphor exaggerates her enthusiasm for the relationship when its good. In relation to facial expressions, this helped us decide that the artist within our music video should sing this line to the camera whilst being positioned in the middle. The facial expressions that will be seen whilst she is singing the lyrics will be a annoyed, frustrated look which will convey the narrative of the artist wanting to be open with the same sex relationship that she is in. Also, having the artist positioned in the middle will emphasise her expressions and make her the focal attention which could imply that she feels very strongly about what she is singing and wants everyone to know. The positioning of being in the middle is conventional to the indie genre, as artists tend to be unknown within the genre, therefore the positioning allows them to be the focal attention and also promote themselves to the wider audience.

Overall, the music video will be narrative based because of the hidden meanings we found from the lyrics analysis that helped prompt us with many ideas to create a narrative. However, there are lyrics that will be used to convey the performance side of our music video as seen above, because indie artists tend to be instrumentally talented as well. 

The relationship between the artist and audience is evident through the lyrics included within the song etc "Stories of all we did","Because I thought of you, Just from the thought of you" and "I just wanna be by your side". The first lyric of "stories of all we did" creates a relationship between the artist and audience as it conveys how the artist is memorising her relationship and is letting the audience into the memories through the narrative of the whole music video. Also, it makes the audience emphasise with the artist as the lyrics give the impression of the artist being lonely as she is talking about the past, meaning she's experiences a love loss. In addition, the lyric "Because I thought of you, Just from the thought of you" helps establish a relationship between the artist and audience, as it further conveys the concept of heart break and love loss that she's in, which the audience may relate to if they have experienced something similar. During these lyrics the artist will be sad and convey these emotions which will help further gain sympathy from the audience and make them understand how she's feeling. Lastly, the lyric "I just wanna be by your side" again portrays the theme of missing someone and helps create a relationship with the audience.This is conventional to the indie genre, as artists often illustrate their emotions and feelings within the narrative or concept of the music video in a relatable way in order to create a relationship between them and the audience through realism. 

Analysing the lyrics for our chosen song, will help us plan our storyboard for our music video through the annotations made. The analysis has helped us establish the hidden meanings/messages of the songs for example missing someone, and also what is going to be included in each part of the lyrics. For example, the first verse will show the narrative element of the video of the artist looking at the memories through the photographs of the relationship and the second verse will showcase the happy memories that they had. Also, the performance elements will precisely be seen in the choruses of the song as these will make it look like the artist telling her story to the audience through her performances which are repeated in the chorus. In summary, the lyrics analysis will prompt us with specific ideas to include in our storyboard, so that we visually understand how our music video is going to look like.  

Planning Lighting & Colour - Miss Miller*

Lighting and colour is important within a music video, as it helps establish the mood and atmosphere of the song and give further meanings to what is going on . For example, low key lighting can help create a dark atmosphere within a video due to its lack of light which creates enigma and suspense. In addition, the use of colour is essential in a music video as it helps connote different things to make the music video more understanding e.g the colour red could connote passion and love within the music video, and establish that there is a relationship involved. Overall, colour and lighting is important because it helps present the different hidden meanings within the music video, making it more interesting to watch.

The first lighting that will be evident in our music video is low key lighting. This will be used in the bonfire scene when the artist and her lover are at a bonfire event and playing with sparklers. The only form of light that'll be seen will be from the fireworks and sparklers. The reason why this particular scene will have low key lighting is because the event will be during the night so the fireworks are visible to see. The use of this is conventional to the indie genre as it helps make the scene look realistic due to It being set in the night and the indie genre generally portrays realism so that the audience can relate to what is happening. This is because it wouldn't make sense if there was high key lighting when they're at a bonfire event, as you wouldn't be able to see the fireworks. The use of this low key lighting will set the atmosphere of the scene, by making it seem more intimate and exciting as the only source of light is coming from the sparklers and fireworks. This will represent the artist as at ease, in high spirits and content with where she is at the moment, as the low key lighting illuminates the relationship and makes it look special. Also, the low key lighting could convey how the relationship is quite dark, but the sparklers give signs of excitement and hope included in it. Overall, the lighting will give a sense of realism by conveying the setting in its natural light which could help build a relationship with the audience as they could relate to the low key lighting evident outdoors at night. The low-key lighting connotes the hidden love of the hidden relationship in the narrative as when in darkness you cannot see anything, however the fireworks show the sparks in their love which makes it seem rare due to the setting that they are in. 

Secondly, natural lighting will be used in the music video, especially when the couple are seen indoors at the artists house and bedroom together. The use of this lighting will show them being natural and intimate with each other which gives a sense of realism in the video. The purpose of this lighting is to show the relationship in the narrative naturally and convey the rawness of what they are doing to show realism. This will help the audience see clearly the realness of the relationship and also make them understand what is going on. Natural lighting is conventional to the indie genre as it shows the scene in its natural setting and further showcases realism that is well known in this genre for making it look relatable for the audience. The natural lighting will represent the artist as honest and free spirited as it portrays her as revealing herself to the audience in her natural state, portraying her as confident because she's not hiding who she is. This helps build a relationship between the artist and audience because it makes them feel as if they're getting an insight of how the artist is like, so it makes it look like they have a bond. Also the natural lighting presents the hidden message of the relationship being authentic and pure because the lighting is natural and conveys them naturally connoting that they do not need to hide inside unlike when they were in low key lighting. 

Thirdly, high key lighting will be used in our music video. This type of lighting will be used when the couple are walking through Camden Market looking at the stalls and shops and also when they are at the field dancing around with their friends. The use of high key lighting in the market and field scenes will help portray realism as they will be there in the day, so it'll capture the reality of the scene and the narrative. Also, the high key lighting will help convey the artist and her girlfriends facial expressions and body language clearly so that it shows the narrative. For example, the high key lighting will show their body language of the artist trying to hold her partners hands but she pulls away whilst walking through the market, which conveys their lack of intimacy and makes the audience establish that they're in a troubled relationship. The use of high key lighting helps represent the artist as fulfilled and happy in the field scene because the lighting gives a vibrant feel to the scene, and suggests that she is content with her relationship at the moment. This could help build a relationship between the artist and the audience, as it showcases clearly what is going on and make the audience feel apart of what is going on, especially when its shot from a hand held shot. Also, high key lighting in the field scenes when they are seen dancing around through the smoke and drinking alcohol with their friends, will help exaggerate the excitement and rebellious activities that they're doing which sets a jubilant atmosphere. High key lighting is conventional in the indie genre, as it helps convey the mood of the music video and also shows the characters or artists facial expressions and body language to show the narrative. Furthermore, the high key lighting will be used differently in the two scenes. In the Camden Market scene, high key lighting will be used negatively to showcase the complicated relationship. In the field scene, high key lighting will be used positively to show the couple and their friends having fun in a rural isolated place. The contrast between the two gives the hidden message that the artist is an extrovert when in public urban places, whilst her partner is an introvert but when they are in a rural, isolated, quiet area such as the field, her partner is extroverted and more comfortable to show her happiness in the relationship. The use of this contrast helps the audience understand further about the narrative and how the artist's partner only feels comfortable in the relationship where there is not many people around. 

The colour blue will be evident in our music video. We will see this colour through the iconography; smoke canister, which is in the field scene where the artist and her partner are having fun with their friends. The colour blue is unconventional to the indie genre, as the colours brown, green and pastel colours are used in an indie music video to portray nature. However, were going to challenge this by including blue, that connotes the depression in American culture;"singing the blues" or "Feeling blue", which could represent our artist within this scene as quite upset as she is having to play down her relationship with her partner when around her friends as she doesn't want to be out in the open. The use of this will help build a relationship between the audience and the artist, as they can relate to her emotions of feeling sad through the blue smoke and even sympathise with her. Also, the colour blue conveys calmness and peacefulness which could represent the artist as calm and respectful towards her partners decisions, which portrays her as a devoted and loyal person. This may make the audience admire the artist as the smoke represents her as respectful and they may admire her for being so and believe that she is a nice person that is not selfish. Therefore the artist could be idolised by the audience as a role model that respects other peoples decisions and is selfless and puts other people first. 

The next colour that will be seen in our music video is orange. This will be through the iconography of colourful smoke canisters that will be present when the artist is seen with her friends in the field jumping around and holding alcohol bottles, behaving like teenagers. The use of orange is conventional to the indie genre as it is used to convey happy times in the narrative seen whether through a filter or an orange item. The orange smoke will convey the scene as dynamic and energetic as orange connotes happiness and energy due to it mixing with red and the cheerfulness of yellow. This will make the scene lively and exaggerate the fun that the artist and her friends are having, creating a joyous atmosphere within the video. Furthermore, the colour orange will represent the artist as vibrant, creative, enthusiastic and demanding attention because of the brightness of the colour, which grabs the audiences attention into seeing what she is doing and portraying herself as a fun character. This will help build a relationship with the target audience of 17-25 year olds, as it shows the lively scene of having fun with your friends in isolated places, and being rebellious which they can relate to and emphasise with the artist. 

Our target audience of 17-25 can build a relationship with our artist through the use of lighting and colour in a number of ways. In reference to lighting, a close relationship can be built between the audience and artist through the use of natural lighting. This is because natural lighting makes the scene look realistic and helps the audience establish the realism of what is going on in the scene through this lighting. The reason why it helps the artist build a relationship with them is because of the naturalness portrayed through the lighting that makes what is shown relatable to them. Also, high key lighting and bright colours such as orange, help build a relationship between the artist and audience, because of the flamboyance and vibrant atmosphere they portray. High key lighting and bright colours portray liveliness and excitement which helps the audience emphasise with the artist, as this age range or 17-25 are stereotyped into doing lively, adventurous things because of their youthfulness. Therefore, it helps build a relationship between the artist and audience as they can relate to the activeness portrayed in the music video, due to being in the same age range and likely participating in these activities. Planning lighting and colour was very helpful in figuring out the hidden meanings that each can provide within our music video. For example, the use of the colour blue connotes sadness which could portray the artist within the scene as sad. This shows how colour is important when further establishing what the visuals and lyrics are conveying. If I was to not plan for lighting and colour, I wouldn't know how to direct the artist and characters on how to convey their emotions and body language as there would be no meaning to it and also be able to make a conventional indie music video. 

Planning Individual Magazine Advert - Miss Georgiou*

A magazine advert is important for an artist as it is a form of synergy which further promotes the artist to a wider audience. Also, the magazine advert contains information that tells the reader why they should buy it and what is included in the album. A magazine advert is important when presenting an artist as well as promoting them, as it showcases their personality and style through the typography, colour and language used etc. Magazine adverts are effective as it gives the artist another platform for them to promote themselves, especially when their debuting as it attracts a wider audience, who will be intrigued to see what the artist is about. Therefore, having a magazine advert further promotes the artist and their albums which increases their sales and gains them more profit. I will be creating a magazine advert and it'll be conveying the indie genre conventions since I am making a indie music video. Also, having a magazine advert for my artist is essential as the target audience is 17-25 year olds and they are prone to buy magazines, so the use of a magazine advert will promote my artist to her audience. Planning is important in order to create an effective magazine advert, as it gives you an idea on what to include your product and also outlines the problems that you wouldn't be able to do if you wasn't to plan. Planning the magazine advert will act as a guide and also give me inspirations to include in my final advert, so that it is conventional and successful as possible. 

My magazine advert will be for my artist, Sharna Rae and it will be promoting her debut album 'Illuminate' that features the hit song 'Wings' which is a Birdy song. Firstly, the layout and design of the magazine includes the artist walking away to the right, holding her guitar through a field. The typography of her name and the single is aligned to the left, whereas the album title is positioned at the bottom in the centre of the grass below the artist. I took this inspiration from the Birdy magazine advert, as the layout was similar by having the artist aligned to the right and the typography on the left. The artist will be shot from a long shot which will show her from head to toe and the setting that she's in e.g field. Long shots are conventional to the indie genre as they help establish the setting that the artist is in and portray the narrative from a full frame. So, I decided that a long shot will be essential to showcase the artist as the audience will be able to see her facial expressions and body language as well as the setting that will disclose the content of the album. The use of this particular element of cinematography within my advert will be essential when appealing to my target audience because it shows the artist fully, and displays her name in bold which grabs the audiences attention. Therefore, the layout and design on my magazine advert will appeal to the audience as they can see the artist clearly on the right, and the typography aligned to the left which keeps the magazine neutral and portrays the artist as neutral which the audience may admire about her. This gives them the impression that the artist is not fussed about fame but does want to get her music across, as the unbiased layout conveys her at the same level as the typography, implying that she's all about the music and is genuine. This may appeal to the audience, as they will feel like she is genuine and not big headed through the fair layout, making them admire her honesty and want to listen to her music as they believe she is real. 

My chosen image is of the artist walking whilst holding her guitar in a field. The reason why I chose this, is because the setting of a field connotes well being and prosperity which reflects part of the debut single "wings" by portraying the artist as free and independent. I was inspired by Gabrielle Aplin's digipak, to have the image of the artist walking away, as in her digipak there's an image of her holding balloons and walking along a beach. This inspired me to have the image of my artist walking, as it portrays her as being on a journey which intrigues the audience to figure out where she's going. Also It portrays her as determined and focus on herself, as she's focused on where she's going not caring about her surroundings.   The use of this setting helps convey the single and album title "Illuminate" as the artist is alone which could suggest she's in the spot light and is illuminated. Also the field shows her as free and having "wings" because of the wide space she's in suggests that she is not restricted and is able to do what she likes. This foreshadows the album as being quite heartfelt, and personal as the images include the artist and the setting connotes what may be included in the album e.g a sense of being restricted and finally being free. Furthermore, this choice of image allows the showcase the artist and her talent which promotes her as being extra talented. This is because we can see her from a long shot holding the iconography; guitar which displays that she is not only talented vocally but instrumentally too. The use of this helps the audience gain more knowledge about the artist on what she can do other than sing, so that they can get to know her as an artist. This will appeal to the audience as they get to see what else she can do, which may make them feel like they know her more in depth. The reason why I've chosen the elements of setting and iconography to be included in the magazine advert, is because it foreshadows what setting and iconography will be included in the music video. This creates a link between the debut music video of "Wings" because within my music video, the artist will be seen in a field playing a guitar, therefore the use of this showcases these elements within the magazine advert and gives the audience a tease of what is going to be included in the video. Appealing to the audience, this creates suspense and buzz around the album, as the audience discuss what they think will be included in the album and seen in the music video due to the clues given through the magazine advert. 

The colours that are included in my magazine advert are: Green, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Red and Black. Firstly, the colour green is seen through the grass in the field and also the bush that'll have the typography stating the debut single in it. The colour green connotes nature and growth as well as harmony and freshness which could suggest that the artist is growing up from a teenager to an adult which is a natural process. The green connotes freshness and could symbolise how the artist is fresh to the music industry and debuting her self to the world, therefore representing herself as something new and interesting which grabs the audiences attention.  Also, the green colour could imply that the album will convey themes that are natural and relatable to the audience e.g relationships, because the colour is associated with naturalness, creating a relationship between the artist and the audience due to the nature that is portrayed within in the album and music video. Also, the colour is conventional to the indie genre, especially through the field setting because indie music videos are based on realism, and having naturalistic settings that help convey this and makes the audience be able to relate to what is going on within the video. The typography of the artist name (Sharna Rae) will be in the colour orange. Orange connotes warmth, positivity and happiness which represents the artist as happy through the vibrancy given from the colour. Also, the purpose of having orange as the colour of the artist name is to grab the audiences attention and showcase her name so that it'll be remembered. The orange foreshadows the themes of fun and happiness being included in the album, which may appeal to the target audience of 17 - 25 year old as they're prone to be having fun and experiencing things at this stage of their lives. Next, the colour blue will be seen through the sky as the magazine advert will be shot during the day. Blue connotes tranquillity and peacefulness which represents the artist as calm and content with where she's at. However, blue could also connote sadness as it is the colour that is associated with tears, this implies that there could be some sense of sadness within the album. Which there is in the music video for the single Wings, as it's about a complicated relationship that the artist is in, showcasing her feelings of sadness. In relation to colour, the next colour that will be evident in my magazine advert is yellow. Yellow will be seen through the typography; wings and Illuminate. These are two important words as wings is the name of the single that I will be making a music video to, and Illuminate is the album title for the artist, Sharna Rae. The reason why I chose the colour yellow for these two particular typography is because yellow connotes brightness, enlightenment and happiness due to its bright colour and this represents the album title Illuminate well as yellow acts like a spotlight because it is an intense colour. Furthermore, the colour yellow will represent the artist as being in the spotlight and coming out to the world which appeals to the audience as the vivid colour attracts their attention quickly. It also foreshadows that there is going to be some sense of happiness and joy within in the album which gives more hints to the audience on what is to be included in the album. Contrasting the colour yellow, will be the colour black which will be seen in the typography " Featuring no.1 single" and " Debut Album". The purpose of having black within the typography is so that it makes the rest of typography stand out. However, black can also stand out from my magazine advert as it is the only dark colour that is apparent. Black connotes darkness, mystery and power. These connotations will be apparent within my music video, as the relationship is complicated and the black will foreshadow this as being dark. Also, enigma is created through the black as it makes the audience wonder what darkness is included within the album and makes them want to buy it to find out. Lastly, the colour red will be evident within my magazine advert. Red will be seen through mise en scene make up, of the lipstick that the artist is wearing in the magazine advert. Red connotes love, passion and danger which these connotations will be seen in the music video as the theme is relationships. The red lipstick will help represent the artist as feminine as girls usually wear lipstick to look glamorous. However, the connotation of danger from the colour red will symbolise how love is intense and consuming since her relationship is not a stable one. The use of red will appeal to the audience as they know what red is associated with and it'll make them understand more of whats included in the album e.g red associated with love, which foreshadows a relationship in the album.

Moving onto typography, there will be 2 different types. Firstly, the typography that says "Sharna Rae" which is the artists name will be in a bold capitalised font in the colour orange and will be positioned at the top of the magazine advert. The reason why this particular typography will be in this font is because I think it is the most important as it states the artist's name which the audience need to know first. I was inspired by other indie artist's such as Birdy and Lana Del Rey to have a large font at the top that says the artist name. I think this is vital for indie artists as most of them are usually unknown, so the use of this helps give the audience the name of the artist so that they know who's music belongs to who. I decided to make this particular font just simple and bold and not quirky as some indie artist may have, because like Lana Del Rey's magazine advert, I just want to get her name straight across without no distractions so that it is clear to the audience who my artist is. The typography is subversive for not having a quirky font or personalised font as the name, however it is conventional to the indie genre as to being positioned at the top and being clear on what is being said. The rest of the typography of my magazine advert will be different to the artist's name, by having a smaller sized font which will be in the colours black and yellow. The typography 'Featuring no.1 single" will be black and "wings" will be yellow. Both will be the same font that will be simple and in lower case and it will be seen in the green bush. The typography "Debut album" and "Illuminate" will be same but instead it'll be capitalised. I chose this because I think the album name is more important than the single as the audience need to know the album name more. However, both wings and illuminate will be in yellow which appeals to the audience due to the brightness of the colour. The font for these two typography will be simplistic, as I believe the more straightforward it is the better as Indie artists don't rely on escapism but on realism. Realism will be seen through the fonts through their condenses, whereas pop artists will have flamboyant fonts to appeal their audience to gain escapism.  

The style of language in my magazine advert will be like the typography, dull and simplistic. This is because I believe the straight forwardness will be understandable for the target audience of 17-25 and is not time consuming to read and gets straight to the point. The language used are "Featuring no. 1 single" and "debut album". This state the facts about the album and single including and tells the audience exactly what they need to know without over exaggerating it. This links with the ideology of the indie genre relying on realism, except from escapism like pop does as it is plain and straightforward and gets the message across easily. Also, the style of language promotes the artist and the album well as it states that its her debut album, which shows that she is a new artist and this makes the audience intrigued to know what she is about. Also, the language "Featuring No.1 single", clearly states the most successful song that is in the album, and still makes it sound outstanding without using adjectives. This is because it clearly states that it's hit number one in the charts, and through this vagueness, it appeals to the target audience as they tend to be the ones to follow the trends or what's popular in music. The style of language will help build a relationship between the audience and artist, as they will feel the artist is not trying to boost her self up, and is just being honest which connotes her as genuine. Also, the vagueness of this style of language created enigma within the magazine advert, as it doesn't give much away and simply states facts which the audience may take on board and feel intrigued to listen to the album to find out more about it. 

Conventions of the indie genre is apparent in my magazine advert. Firstly, the convention of having an acoustic guitar in the indie genre is evident in my magazine advert. This is seen as the artist is holding the guitar whilst walking away in the field. This is conventional to the indie genre, as artist usually showcase their instrument to show they are instrumentally talented and not only vocally. Also, an acoustic guitar especially is a conventional instrument to the indie genre as it connotes melodic, harmonious and a sweet sounding tone which it does give. Therefore, having a guitar present in my magazine advert is conventional to the indie genre, as there usually is some type of performance through an instrument that artists use to convey their emotions and the narrative. Another convention that I have used in my magazine advert is that it'll be shot in natural lighting so that is shows the artist in a realistic setting. The use of natural lighting is conventional to the indie genre as it further illustrates realism and shows the activities that are going on in their natural form. The natural lighting will portray my artist as honest and genuine as it gives an impression of her not hiding herself from the audience and being true to them. This appeals to the audience as they'll feel like the artist is being genuine with what she's displaying and also it shows her in a recognisable way as they can relate to the setting that she's in, which creates a relationship between the artist and the audience. Another convention that I have included in my magazine advert is a long shot through the use of cinematography. The long shot is used to show the artist from head to toe and the setting that she's in e.g field. The field connotes a sense of freedom and space which could foreshadow the narrative within the wings music video, as it is about a struggling relationship that the artist is in and wants to be open with. This is conventional to the indie genre, as long shots help establish what setting the artist is in and also convey the narrative as well. The use of my long shot will appeal to the audience as they will feel once again, that the artist is being open and honest about her self since we see her in a open environment. Also, the use of the long shot will help convey her body language and facial expressions which will be walking with a neutral face looking down. This suggests that the artist is going through a journey that may be hard but worth it to her, and it is personal since she has her guitar with her which is her personal instrument when conveying her feelings. I believe that my conventions will be clear for my audience, and it showcases the indie genre well because the elements are often used in the indie genre and they can gain knowledge on whats to be included in the album.

I found planning for my magazine advert useful in relation in taking pictures for my actual advert, as it has given me an idea of what i'm going to include and also how i'm going to apply this when using the software photoshop. Also, it's help me going in greater depth into certain elements and why they should be included in my magazine advert to make it conventional to the indie genre. In addition it has assisted me with a draft of what my magazine advert will look like, where the different elements will go e.g typography and it will work as a design that I will work with or even alter when making my actual magazine advert on photoshop. I feel more aware of the pictures that I need to take for my advert, as I know how it'll look like from my draft for example the artist being shot from a long shot and positioned to the right of the frame. The planning of magazine advert will help me direct the artist when telling her where to stand as it'll act as guide for me when doing the photoshoot. Therefore, I feel like i am more prepared for the editing of the magazine advert and the photoshoot for it, as the planning will be my guide when carrying out these events. Planning my individual magazine advert has been helpful, and I will use it in the final creation so that my magazine advert is conventional to the indie genre and promotes the artist. 

Planning Artist Image - Miss Miller*

The artist representation in a music video is essential as it allows the audience to see their personality through their costume and understand more about the artist themselves. Also, the artists image in the music video helps convey the narrative and shows the hidden meanings which are present within the music video for example red lipstick representing the artist as seductive, passionate or dangerous. In addition, the artist representation enables to the audience to build a relationship with the artist as the costumes presented may be relatable to them and make them feel like they have something in common with the artist. Overall the artist image in a music video, help assist on conveying the conventions of the genre and make the audience understand the conventions and their meanings behind them through the use of costume. Since celebrities are always changing their image for example Rihanna and Miley, their representations help to draw attention from a wider audience making them more successful. However, I am doing an indie singer, Birdy and indie artists tend to be consistent as they rely on realism and not escapism like pop artists. 

Our first costume for the artist is an outdoors outfit that consists of a leather jacket, grey dress, tights and boots. Her hair and make up will be a natural look where the make up is minimal because she'll only have winged eyeliner, red lipstick/lipgloss and wavy hair. This outfit will be seen i the bonfire scene where she is at the bonfire event with her girlfriend and their playing with the sparklers. As the outfit is suitable for the setting, this is conventional to the indie genre as it portrays a realistic image which the audience can relate to her with. Also, the black leather jacket represents the artist as a bold, daring and mysterious. She is represented as bold and daring through the black leather jacket because she's willing to do what ever with her partner. However, the grey dress represents her as mature and responsible as grey is usually associated with old age, but in reference to the music video it will associate the artist as calm and relieved from a chaotic world around her and her partner. This portrays her in the scene as being all in with her partner and not caring about the people around them. The tights and boots specifically Dr Martens, will convey the grunge element of the costume which shows her as quite edgy and fierce which the audience could be intrigued by. Moving onto make up, the winged eyeliner will link in with the song title which is wings and convey her as free and finding her self through this freedom. Also, winged eyeliner is conventional to the indie genre as seen on Lana Del Rey and Lorde in their work. The red lipstick will convey her feminine side and also represent her as passionate and confident. This excites her emotions and motivation towards her partner and also conveys the narrative of it being about a relationship as girls usually wear red lipstick when going out or to look seductive to impress someone. The use of red lipstick is conventional to the indie genre as it is usually used on the artist to foreshadow what the songs in their albums about, for example Lana Del Rey has themes of sex and relationships in her born to die video and the red lipstick she wears on the album cover symbolises these themes.  

Our next costume that the artist will be wearing in the music video, is a black turtle neck, with black ripped jeans, black high stop converses, a parker jacket and chocker as an accessory. The black turtle neck shows no voyeurism of the artist which is an element of Goodwin's theory, which is conventional to the indie genre as they do not use their body to attract their audience, but instead appeal to their audience through the realism conveyed in the narrative. Also, by having black ripped jeans, this portrays her as quite ragged and rough which could also connote darkness and enigma which the audience can explore in the music video. In addition, the ripped jeans could represent her relationship as being rough and not stable. The khaki green parker jacket connotes nature and wildlife which could represent the artist as natural and having a wild side. This could portray her as being natural and liking the outdoors which she is currently at. Her black converse high tops further represent her mysteriousness and again no voyeurism as they are high tops. These shoes are conventional to the indie genre as they are common to be worn by the target audience of 17 - 25, so it helps make her relatable to the audience and not seem stuck up as she's a celebrity. Moving onto the chocker which is the accessory that she will be wearing, it will be black and around her neck in the scene. The use of the chocker being worn could represent the relationship as controlling as the artists partner is in control of their exposure of being lesbians whereas the artist just goes with the flow because she is so in love with her. Her and make up will be the same as costume number 1 which consisted of natural wavy hair, minimal makeup with just winged eyeliner and red lipstick. This outfit will be seen when the artist is with her partner walking through camden market looking at the stalls and shops. The outfit is conventional to the indie genre, as it is simplistic and ordinary as the clothes can be purchased at affordable shops and also the ordinariness makes the artist look relatable to the audience.Through the first two outfits which consist of dark clothing, they relate to the negative aspects of the content of the video. For instance, in the Camden Market Scene she is seen wearing black turtle neck top, jeans and shoes. During this scene there will be conflict seen between the artist and her partner, and the dark outfit will portray the troubled times she's in with her partner. Therefore, the outfit connotes the conflict theme of the narrative, by visually illustrating the emotions and distress of the artist through her clothing, giving the audience a further insight on the story being told. 

The third costume that our artist will be wearing includes an oversized jumper, with leggings and her make up will be minimal and hair in a messy bun hairstyle or a pony tail. This costume will be seen when she is at home, in the house with her girlfriend. The oversized jumper and leggings portray her as being comfortable and warm in the setting that she is in and represents her as being able to be herself when she's in this environment. This outfit is conventional to the indie genre as it shows the artist as normal because they're not wearing flashy clothing indoors, which the audience can relate with as they may wear this outfit when they're at home as well because they're in the comfort of their homes. Our artist will be wearing no shoes and this will further represent the artist as being comfy and relaxed in her home environment which the audience can relate to as home is seen as a place of privacy and where everyone can be themselves. The artists make up will be minimal and natural with likely just having mascara on to represent her as loose and composed in the setting she's in. Also having barely any make up with her partner, show the audience that the artist feels like they can be themselves and look natural around their partner which portrays their relationship as honest. Her hair will either be in a mess bun or a ponytail in this scene. This also accompanies the representations of being comfortable in her home and show's she does not care about how she looks like as she's in doors. In addition, these hair styles are conventional to the indie genre as they look quite quirky and girlie and also are commonly worn by the target audience as well, which enables the audience especially girls to relate to her even more. 

The final costume that will be worn by our artist includes a cream dress with a denim jacket, black tights and Dr Marten boots. Her hair and make up will be more done, as she will have heavy eye make up, contoured cheeks and hair will be wavy, loose curls. This outfit will be seen when the artist is singing in the street and field. The cream dress will represent the artist as feminine and the colour cream connotes innocence, rare and purity which could portray our artist as rare and pure due to this song being included in her debut album. The denim jacket will portray our artist as retro and vintage which is conventional to the indie genre as these are quite 90s styled which portrays artist as old fashioned. Also, the blue in the denim jacket connotes peace, calmness and truthiness which could represent the artist this way and make the scenes where she is wearing this more sentimental and honest to her audience.Furthermore the oversized nature of the jacket could portray the hidden meaning of how all of her issues are over whelming her. However due to the connotations of being strong denim presents, this could convey that the artist is over whelmed but is trying to stay strong. Therefore, leading to her being idolised from the audience as they see her overcoming her struggles from her relationship through her costume.  She will also be wearing black tights as she will be outside, and it'll be cold because were shooting in the winter so this will make the scenes more realistic due to her wearing clothes suitable to the weather. The black tights further represent her as mysterious and dark which is used throughout the music video, which could show how she is present in the music video, but there is more to her so the audience feel intrigued to learn more about her and will do this by continuing watching her music videos. The shoes that she will be wearing are Dr Martens, which are conventional to the indie genre, as they look grungy. The use of these shoes will contrast her cream dress because instead of portraying her as innocent, these shoes will show that she is still rebellious and conveys her personality of being a rebel and unique but still feminine which allows the audience to understand her more as a person. Her hair will be loosely wavy which will represent her as natural and girly and also portray her as being free in the moment and expressive to her audience. This will help build a relationship with the audience as the loose curls will show her being as open to expressive her experiences which makes them feel entitled to know her more as an artist and person. When it comes to make up, it will be quite heavy than the make up before. She will have dark eye make up which will accompany the representation of being mystic and dark, also her face will be contoured to bring her face more defined. The use of having more make up on than the other scenes, is to show the different side of her looking quite glamorous but not too much, as she is performing to her audience and wants to look nice. Also, this supports Dyers theory of an artist being able to look ordinary and extraordinary as she is seen as ordinary in the narrative so the audience can relate to her experiences, but extraordinary when she is singing and playing an instrument so they see her as fascinating to watch in her performance. The use of this make up may be unconventional to the indie genre as they usually keep their make up natural, but were including this so that our artist stands out slightly from other indie artists so that she is seen as more unique and exclusive to her audience. 

The ways in which our target audience can build a relationship with the artist through their image is through their costume, hair and makeup. An example of this would be through make up, this is because the majority of the music video, our artist will look natural in the narrative parts which make the artist look normal and relatable to the audience as she is seen as ordinary and going through experiences that the audience can go through. Also, the connotations from the costume will help build a relationship with the audience as they can gain more understanding of the artists personality through them e.g. khaki green parker jacket connotes adventures and nature which could convey the artist as being adventurous and naturalistic. Planning artist image has helped me understand furthermore how to present our artist so that its conventional to the indie genre and appealing to the audience. Also, without planning the artists image, we wouldn't know beforehand what to include in our music video, and the costumes would not fit perfectly to our narrative because we rushed. Therefore, planning our artist image will help us connect our artist with the narrative and make it more understandable to the audience and also convey the indie genre successfully.   

Applying For Copyright - Miss Georgiou

Copyright is the right given to creators of some types of media rights to control
how they're used and distributed. Music, books, video and software can all be covered by copyright law. There are limitations imposed by copyright for example it forbids you from; giving a copy to a friend, making a copy and then selling it, using the software on a network (unless the license allows it) and renting the software without permission of the copyright holder. The law that governs copyright in the UK is called the copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1998. The reasons why 

Without having the permission from the original artist to adapt their work, you could be used and taken to court. An example of an artist provoking copyright in the music industry is the Marvin Gaye case. This involved Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams and the issue was that their song Blurred lines had elements in which it copied the 1977 hit Got to give it up by Marvin Gaye. In result of this, both musical artists had to pay Marvin Gaye's family $7.4 million for their violation of copyright which was even taken to court. Justin Bieber and Usher also come up against the same situation as they were fined $10 million due to the song "Somebody To Love" having similar musical features for example an almost "identical rhythm and strikingly similar melody" to the same titled song Somebody to love by Devin Copeland aka De Rico and his songwriting partner Maerio Overton. Therefore this shows that if anyone in the music industry was to copy in anyway another artists song, there will be consequences that may result to a lot of money being taken away, reducing profit. 

So we decided that in order to avoid having the same situation as the artists mentioned of having to pay for using other peoples musical work without permission, we emailed the record label that Birdy belongs to and asked them for their permission to use her song for our music video so that we do not breach the copyright law. Also, we had to apply for copyright so our media coursework;music video, was eligible to be shown to the exam board OCR and our media class. 

We did this by going on the internet and searching which record labels Birdy belonged to who are Warner Bros. Records, Warner Music Group and 14th Floor Records, and emailed them whether we could obtain the rights of her song in order to create our music video. We did receive a response from one of them, but they stated how they are not the right person to get permission and forwarded us with a phone number which belonged to the legal department and called them instead to receive permission. After calling the phone number, they simply gave us permission and now we have rights to use Birdy's song Wings for our music video. 

Planning Cinematography - Miss Miller

Cinematography is vital when creating any type of media. In reference to a music video, it is essential because it makes the video look more interesting due to the different shots, angles and positioning seen. Without different types of cinematography in a music video, it will be boring and become un successful due to there not being a target audience watching it. Therefore, cinematography brings the music video to life and conveys the hidden messages behind each shot that may link to the narrative, concept or performance seen. It also is essential when showing different things for example a long shot shows the setting of the music video. Additionally, the use of cinematography helps convey different emotions and connotations within the music video which help give the audience a further understanding of the music video and what it is trying to convey.

The first camera technique my group will have in our music video, is close up shots. A close up is a camera shot that tightly frames of an object or a persons face (unless specified otherwise). A close up will be used to show the artist singing as it will help establish her current emotion as the audience will see this through her facial expressions. This will help build a relationship between the artist and the audience as it'll present the artist as expressive and the emotions conveyed could be understood by the audience and create empathy from the audience. A close up will also be used to show the characters facial expressions for example the artists partners facial expression could be looking quite annoyed as she does not want to fully expose their relationship when they're in public. Close ups are conventional to the indie genre because it represents emotion in the music video, and artists from this genre usually sing about something that is close to them, therefore the use of close ups emphasises this. I have seen this shot been used in other indie music video and I agree that it helps give deeper meanings in the music video, which get the audience thinking and maybe relating to the artist with her situation. The use of having close ups in our music video will represent our artist as open, genuine and expressive. She'll be represented as open because the close up allows her to express her feelings and emotions through her facial expressions that'll accompany her singing to give deeper meaning. Also, she will be portrayed as genuine because she is not hiding anything from her audience and they'll feel as if she can trust them, create a relationship between her and the audience.

To continue, the second camera technique that'll be used in our music video is a side view positioning. This is simply a shot that is positioned from the side of the object or person. The camera will be positioned on the side when were shooting the partner leaving the artist after hugging at the end of the video. The use of this side view will portray the partner walking away fully and the artists facial expressions to her walking away which will be sad. This will help the audience relate with the artist especially with the situation of wanting to be with someone but also at the same time having to let them go. A side view is conventional to the indie genre as it shows the location the characters are and also their facial expressions and body language from a side view that may make the viewers feel like they are there witnessing the action. The use of this positioning of the camera will represent our artist as in love, caring as it'll show her being all focused on her partner and looking sad when she leaves which shows that she's in love and always wants to be with her.

Thirdly, we will use a tilt shot (Vertical pan), which is a shot that is used to capture a feel of motion why keeping a moving subject in a sharp focus. However, since were doing a vertical panning shot, our camera will move vertically (toes to head) at the dancers. This will be used when the ballerinas are dancing and it'll introduce them in a interesting way. Horizontal panning shots are conventional to the indie genre due to it following a person around for example walking in the street. However we are going to challenge this convention and make ours a vertical pan, so that the dancers are shown fully which could represent the artist as having nothing to hide and willing to tell her story through the movements of the dancers. Furthermore, the vertical pan will represent our artist as an open book and creative. She's represented as these two descriptions because the creativity of having dancers visually dance the emotions within the narrative shows that she has different ways of communicating to her audience, and also she's represented as an open book due to her sharing her emotions and experiences through the dancing with the viewers. 

Another camera technique that my group are considering to include is a hand held shot. This shot is a filmmaking or video production technique in which a camera is held in the camera persons hands as opposed to being mounted on a tripod or other base. A hand held shot will be used when the couple are walking in the camden market where they'll be seen from the back or side. The use of this camera shot will show what the artist and her lover are doing and also show the scenery in which they're in. The reason why we have chosen to include a hand held shot in particular for this scene, is so the audience feel like they're apart of the video and are walking with them which could lead to a sense of realism. In addition, the unsteadiness will not portray the scene as steady and could help convey the business of the market which makes it relatable for the audience if they have been to a market. The hand held shot will represent our artist as ordinary as it'll show her walking in the market doing everyday things and make her look like she's one of the members of public and not a celebrity singer. This could create a relationship between the artist and the audience, as they will feel that they can relate to her in the music video with the activity of going to a normal market, therefore portraying naturalness. 

Last but not least, the camera technique that we will include in our music video is a high angle shot. A high angle shot is simply a camera shot that is positioned from above and shows the object or person below it. We will use this shot when the couple are seen playing with the firework sparklers in the bonfire scene. The use of the high angle will highlight the couple as being the most important in the scene by acting like a spotlight for them. High angle shots are conventional to the indie genre as it they help convey an object or person as inferior because they are portrayed as small. In reference to my music video, the high angle will represent the artist as vulnerable and oblivious. This is because it'll illustrate her as being focused on her partner and unaware of the things going around her. Therefore portraying the artist as emotionally invested into her partner because they're seen form a high angle shot which illuminates their connection together and how they're exposed. The use of this high angle shot will help build a relationship between the artist and the audience as it showcases the artist as being content in her relationship, which some could relate to if they were in a relationship. 


I believe our target audience will be able to build a relationship with our artist through the different types of cinematography included within our music video. Having carrying out the target audience research, this helped us choose the types of shots to include in our music video, as they were most favoured. For example a close up and long shots were proposed by the audience as they felt these were conventional to the indie genre for showing the artists facial expressions and setting that they're in to convey the narrative or concept well. Shots such as close ups and a side view positioning help give a personal feeling in the scene so that the audience get an insight on what the artist is feeling. For example, close ups show the facial expressions of the artist and characters which reflects the emotional state their in and tell the narrative through their expressions. Planning cinematography has ensured us with some camera shots that we believe the audience expect to see and be conventional to the indie genre, as well as help convey our narrative in a interesting way. For example, the high angle showing the artist as vulnerable, happy and joyful with her girlfriend in the bonfire scene playing with sparklers, helps show the part of the narrative where we show the good memories they have.
