Meetings - Miss Miller**

The reason why It was important for me to meet with my group regularly, is so that we could discuss each others ideas and include our own individual inputs towards the planning and making of our music video. Also, having meetings made sure everyone was up to date with what was going on at each different stages, therefore making sure everyone was involved and informed about any changes made in relation to our music video. If we were not to have these meetings and discussions about our preparation and making our music video, it would be chaotic when actually proceeding these actions as everyone would be tying to get their ideas across at the same time, therefore slowing our time actually filming our music video.The way we organised our meetings and discussions was that we would come into lessons and discuss what we wanted to include in our music video. However, as school hours were not enough, we did make a group chat so that we could communicate outside of school, therefore making sure everyone knows what is going on and the schedule we had. To make sure we discussed everything, we made a meetings table which showed the different actions or aspects we had to discuss about so that we were organised and on top of everything. For example, a discussion was made when we were analysis the lyrics for our chosen song "wings" by Birdy.

Overall, I believe our group did work well together especially in our communication, as we all respected each others views and listened to the different ideas we had. For example as seen in the screenshot, Bettie asked what was going to happen on that day, and Rishika simply informed everyone the details and what they had to bring. This accompanied the discussion about the photoshoot in the table, as Rishika made sure briefly to everyone on what we were doing. This made sure that we knew what was happening and organised our filming time well, as we all knew what to do. Therefore, by having good communication skills, we were able to successfully negotiate and incorporate the different visions and ideas brought within our discussions to our work. I feel that even though there were times where some of us could not make it to filming or weren't in lessons, we still made sure everyone knew what was going on through our communication outside of school. Recording our discussions and meetings into the meetings table was beneficial, as it reminded us briefly of what we had discussed and envisioned to do when it came to the actual action. Also, the meetings helped the whole group understand what was going on in our production, therefore making the actual filming less time consuming as we would all be on the same page on what we were filming, and have no chaos. 

Music Video Inspirations - Miss Miller*

It is important to gain inspiration from other productions, in my case music videos as it helps you develop your own ideas to incorporate in your production. Therefore, analysing and picking out inspirations from music videos I researched will help with my planning of my own music video, as I will have inspirations that I may consider including within my music video. Also, it helps demonstrate the uses of the inspirations and how they were successful in the music videos I researched, and helps me understand further on how to use the aspects into my own. 

In my what is a music video post, I analysed the music video, Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey. The inspiration I got from this video, was the use of the editing style; time lapse. The time lapse in the video shows clouds moving in the sky at the beginning of the video. The use of this time lapse opens the music video with a narrative due to it having dialogue accompanied with it. I found the use of the time lapse inspirational as it introduced the music video in a nostalgic way, which grabbed my attention therefore succeeding on capturing the audiences attention. This has inspired me to include a time lapse in my music video at the beginning, however mine will be rewinding the whole music video from finish to start quickly. This introduces the narrative in an interesting way and also implies that a story is going to told after it. Also the time lapse at the beginning will suggest that the music video is a past event that has happened to the artist, which makes the audience get an insight of her life, building a relationship between her and the audience. The use of the time lapse is conventional to the indie genre, as it illustrates time passing by and by having my time lapse of glimpses of the narrative rewinded, this portrays the theme of memories which is conventional, as artist's within the indie genre tend to sing about personal experiences. 

Another video that I gathered inspiration from is Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat in my research into chosen music genre post. From this video, what intrigued me the most was the camera technique; tracking, that she used when singing in the middle of the road in the forest. Tracking was used and this was shot from a low angle. The use of this particular cinematography made the focal attention be on Lorde in a fascinating way and made her look superior in the frame as the audience were placed below her. This was inspirational, as I think it made her singing scene look more interesting and also the tracking showed the artist fully by going around her, which helped promote her further. The way in which this camera may be used in my music video, is to introduce the artist in the video as this is because it shows the artist personally and puts the spotlight on her, which will help create a relationship between the audience and the artist. For example, I may consider using this cinematography when my artist is singing, to show her unstably and further connote the lyrics that she is singing which will be sad. The use of the tracking is conventional to the indie genre, as it follows the artist around, therefore giving the artist a further insight on what they're singing about. 

Couple in bedroom not speaking (negative side of relationship)

Another inspiration from this post, but in the music video Panic Cord by Gabrielle Aplin, is the style of video. In this music video the style was primarily narrative based, with a narrative about her ending a relationship because she was bored in it and she thinks she maybe the one to blame for the end. This inspires me to include relationship based narrative in my music video, however mine will be about how two girls are in a secret relationship but one wants to make it public. Both my idea of a narrative and Aplin's narrative show the struggles in relationship which is conventional to the indie genre, as artists usually sing about life experience so that the audience can relate to them. I was inspired to consider having a bedroom as a location in my music video, through Gabrielle Aplin's music video 'Panic Cord'. This is evident throughout the video as we see the artist in a bedroom with her partner play fighting, looking like they've had an argument and also when she is playing the guitar whilst singing. The use of this location also follows star dyers theory of how a star presents themselves as ordinary and extraordinary within a music video.

Gabrielle Aplin follows this as she is seen as ordinary by having a real life setting in her music video e.g. bedroom, kitchen etc. These locations portray her as ordinary because they are recognisable by the audience and they can relate to what happens in there. Also, she is portrays as extraordinary through the use of her playing her guitar as it presents her as being multitalented which the audience may not relate to. However, she is primarily represented as ordinary throughout the music video through costume, setting and natural lighting which helps convey the realism that is expected to be in an indie music video. This is because she plays it  This has inspired me to consider having a bedroom in my music video ad it conveys a realistic setting and shows the artist in their natural form. Also because bedrooms are seen as  a private area were everyone can be themselves, this implies that the artist is allowing the audience to see them as being authentic and real, which is why I want to consider including a bedroom in my music video as it'll help convey a relationship and intimacy of a narrative I'll possibly having. An example of when I would have the location of a bedroom seen in my music video is when the artist is looking into her memory box at the images of her and her partner. This will be following the convention of having real settings in the indie genre as the bedroom connotes privacy and conveys that she's sharing with the audience as they see her in her personal space. 

In the music video Cut by Plum, the use of iconography especially photographs caught my attention. The photographs are seen throughout the music video, for example when the artist is singing and playing on the piano from 2:15 -2:20 and they are seen on top of the piano. The photographs are also used in the video through zoomed in close up shots and jump cuts to show the footage behind the pictures. 
This is evident from 1:28 - 1:40 where we see an image of a man driving a car come to life through the camera shots and editing. The use of the iconography of photographs is conventional to the indie genre, as it represents memories for the artist and convey that they're meaningful to them which makes the audience empathise with what she's feeling. This has inspired me to consider using photographs in my music video to convey a narrative that is based around the artist looking back into her past. This will be evident in my music video when the artist is looking into her memory box and the images of her and her partner. What I found inspirational from the video and its use of the pictures as iconography, is the way it used editing and cinematography to zoom in and showcase the activity shown in the image. The reason why I am intrigued by this is because I believe it will be conventional to the indie genre, as it shows the artist sharing her past with her audience which tends to be included in an indie music video, as artists usually sing about their personal experiences or something close to them. Therefore, the photographs will help build a relationship with the audience whilst being conventional to the indie genre by giving the impression of the artist expressing themselves through the iconography.

The style of video of a performance in Nina Nesbitt's music video 'The Hardest Part' has made consider having a performance in my music video. Through the music video of The Hardest Part, Nina is seen playing an acoustic guitar whilst sitting down and singing through a mic. This follows Goodwin's theory that there is a performance, narrative or concept in a music video and in this case there is a performance. The performance is seen through the use of the acoustic guitar and mic that Nina uses in her music video. A performance is conventional to the indie genre, as it further expresses the emotions or feelings that the artist is showing to the audience. Also I found this inspirational as in the video it follows Goodwin's theory that visuals and music match and this is seen through the use of the guitar, as Nina is seen playing it in time of the music. This gives the impression that she is playing the music live which makes the video look more authentic and believable. This further showcases her talents and makes the audience admire her for being multitalented. This has inspired me to show a performance like Nina's in my music video, as I think it is conventional to the indie genre but also gives the audience further knowledge about the artist as in what they are good at other than vocals. Also, the inspiration of having a performance in my music video is inspirational to me as I think it'll convey the artist in a different light and make her look more extraordinary which catches the audiences attention whilst watching. I am considering incorporating a performance alongside my narrative so that it gives the impression that the artist is telling a story through the performance as well as the narrative which makes the music video more interesting to watch. I will incorporate it by having the artist sing whilst playing an instrument e.g. acoustic guitar or piano, especially when its the chorus. 


The artist representation of being reminiscent inspired me from the music video Panic Cord by Gabrielle Aplin. This is seen through the use of iconography, specifically a memory box that is evident throughout the video. This was inspirational as I believe it conveyed the artist as ordinary and relatable to the audience as she is seen looking back at memories. This inspires me to use the representation of my artist being reminiscent as it'll portray her as thoughtful, deep and reflective which is conventional to the indie genre. I will consider using this inspiration in my music video when the artist is looking back on the memories that she and her partner had, also following the memory theme convention. This representation will help build a relationship between the artist and audience, as they'll empathise with what she's doing and also feel as if the artist is allowing them into her life due to her sharing these memories with them. Therefore creating a relationship between the two and this could lead to longevity, as they will follow artist to find out more about her through her music career. 


An idea that I will definitely put forward to my group members, is the use of iconography especially photographs in our music video. This is because I believe it is conventional to the indie genre and is an interesting way to convey memories or experiences that the artist has had within our narrative. Also another idea that I will forward to my group members is having the setting of a bedroom within our music video, as it is a recognisable location that the audience can relate to, but also shows that the artist is allowing them into her personal space which builds a relationship between the artist and audience. The way I will communicate these ideas across to my members, is that we will have a group discussions of all the ideas we all have and then note them down on a mind map, which will help develop the base of our music video. Also by using inspirations from music videos, it'll hopefully help my group produce a more successful music video as we will have more understanding and knowledge on how certain elements should be used in an indie music video and the effect it'll have on the audience. Therefore, our final product will be conventional but also unique as it'll have our own interpretations in it, hopefully increasing our artist's longevity. 

Filming Schedule - Miss Miller

A filming schedule is a project plan of each days shooting of a film product, in our case a music video. The filming schedule provides a plan of what is going to happen and be including in each shot of a film production, therefore guiding group members on what to do. This informs me and my group members the brief subjects and equipment we need in each shot, so that we know what we have to film on the day. If we were not to have a filming schedule, we would not have a clear idea of what we would have to shoot whilst filming our music video, as it'll be chaotic because everyone would be frustrated and rush shooting since it'll be made on the spot. Therefore, the filming schedule acts as a guide for our filming, and will help us shoot smoothly and efficiently.

What is included in our filming schedule is: Shot, time and date, location, content action, shot types & duration, costume, hair & make up, iconography, personnel and equipment. 

We followed our filming schedule when filming the bonfire/fireworks on the 5th November. Also we included the cinematography planned in the schedule especially long shot to convey the setting. However we added an additional shot; establishing shot to show the scenery that the couple was in and also their body language. However there were sometimes where we couldn't film, for example the field scenes that were meant to be filmed on the 7th November. The reasons to why we did not film was due to the weather which was extremely windy and raining, therefore this would have been difficult for us to film and get efficient shots for our music video of the artist singing. Therefore, we decided to film on the 10th November, where it was less windy and there was no rain, also the sun was out, so our shots of the artist in the field came out as we wanted because we were able to capture good footage where the lighting was good and the artist could perform efficiently.

Another scene that we couldn't film was the Camden market scene on the 14th November because some people were not able to make it on the day scheduled. Therefore we planned to film another day for the scene where everyone could come and also we filmed additional shots whilst being in this location. The additional shots that we filmed were at Camden, and these included more shots of the scenery e.g. flamboyant shop signs and jewellery at the stalls. The reasons why we decided to film these additional shots, is so that we can include them within our music video to convey the location that the characters were in further so that the audience understood where they were more. Also, the additional shots will act as fillers so that the music video is not solely narrative based and keeps it more interesting to watch for example a shot of a colourful 3D elephant on a shop sign. Another time we didn't follow our filming schedule was for the field scenes that were meant to be filmed on the 7th November. The reasons to why we did not film was due to the weather which was extremely windy and raining, therefore this would have been difficult for us to film and get efficient shots for our music video of the artist singing. What I learnt from having a filming schedule when filming a media project, is that it keeps the group organised by informing us what exactly were filming, when were filming it and what equipment we need. This was helpful as it made our filming experience less chaotic because we knew what we were doing, so if there were going to be any complications such as bad weather, we still would know what to film on the next day we film that particular scene.

Planning Editing Styles - Miss Miller*

A variety of editing styles and techniques are essential within a music video. This is because it helps piece the music video together in either a flowing way or drastic way to appeal to the target audience of which genre. For instance a pop music video will include drastic editing styles and effects such as CGI to convey the escapism that it tends to bring. Also, editing styles are important in representing the artist and showcasing the narrative or concept of the video, as it gives the audience more understanding of the genre. 

The first editing style that will be used in our music video is a montage. A montage is a series of short shots that are edited into a sequence to condense space, time and information. They are used through repletion of images, through cutting rhythm,detail or metaphor. A montage will be seen in my music video in the market scene. I was inspired to include a montage in our music video from Gabrielle Aplin's Panic Cord music video, as she had one when she was seen with her boyfriend walking along the beach. The montage will showcase the couple walking through the market, their facial expressions, the public and the items that they are looking at the stalls at etc necklaces. The use of this editing style creates excitement and makes the scene interesting to watch. Also the different shots shown will help appeal to the niche audience due to the creativity and they may feel a sense of escapism from the artist through the use of the different shots in the montage.In addition, the montage makes the scene look more sentimental and fun for the couple as it showcases them as being happy and active with one another, which helps convey the happy memories within our narrative. Furthermore, the montage will represent the artist as in love and content as the different shots will show her facial expressions and activity which convey her feelings towards her partner e.g holding hands, smiling.  A montage is conventional to the indie genre, as it helps establish different things within the scene to the audience such as the artist's facial expressions, what they're doing and where they are at which helps make the narrative or concept more understood.

The next editing technique that will be used in our music video is slow timing of shots. This is when a shot is slowed down and this will be used in the field scene when the artist and her friends are dancing around in the coloured smoke. The use of the slow timing shots will show the characters facial expressions and body language clearly and exaggerate their current emotional state which will be of happiness and liveliness. Also, it'll help convey the happy side of the artist in the narrative as it shows her in a joyful state with her partner and friends and highlights her happiness which the audience may admire. The audience will be appealed by this as the slowness captures the lively scenery that the artist is in, and they could relate to this as it shows the fun they are having and the target audience are known to having fun and being rebellious. Also, the slow timing of shots will be used to show the romance between the artist and her lover as it allows the audience to see how they look at each other and also their actions to one another e.g leaning for a kiss. The slow timing of the shots will show that they are both happy and have strong feelings for one another but also it will intensify the moment that they are in and give it a more intimate feel. This will appeal to the audience as it shows the narrative clearly of there being a relationship within the music video, but also it emphasises their love which the audience may admire and relate to. This builds a relationship between the audience and artist, as they too may relate to their relationship of being intimate and happy which the slow editing captures. In addition, the slow timing of shots will represent the artist as reminiscent, as the slowness of the frames will make them last longer, therefore portraying how the artist wants to indulge every bit of that memory with her partner. This may make the audience empathise with the artist, as they may relate to her in looking back at good memories and looking at every small detail of them. 

Another editing technique were going to include in our music video is filters. Filters help create a different colour effect to the frame and makes the scene look different. We are going to use a sepia filter in our music video to make some scenes look old and vintage. This will be most likely used in the market scene or field scene when the artist is with her friends having fun in the smoke. The sepia filter will accompany the narrative by showing that the actions that are happening in the frame are old memories, however they are happy memories since they're not in a dull colour and dark like it'll be for a black and white filter. I was inspired to consider having a sepia filter in our music video from Lana Del Rey's music video Summertime Sadness where she too used it to convey the memories of her relationship. Sepia filter is conventional to the indie genre because it helps convey the past in a mesmerising and warm way which gives the scene a personal feel to the artist. This builds a relationship between the artist and audience as they feel like the artist is allowing them into her past and getting to know her a bit more which makes it feel like they have a bond. The sepia filter will represent the artist as fun, energetic and content as it'll exaggerate her happiness portrayed within the scenes and make her relatable to the target audience because she is seen having fun. The sepia filter will enable the audience to empathise with the artist due to her showcasing her fun side with them which they may be able to relate to, as 17-25 year olds are stereotypically known to be lively and energetic.  We also may have black and white filter to show the bad side of the relationship as the artist lover doesn't want to be publicly out there in their relationship. The black and white filter will give the frame a sad feeling and convey the emotions of the artist and her lover of being quite down. Black connotes darkness, power and mystery which could be applied to the video as it will imply how the relationship has its dark sides and how the artist's partner is in control of how it is. Also, white connotes innocence, vulnerability and youth which portrays the artist within these dark memories as innocent and oblivious as she's submissive to her partner and is blindly in love to not fight for their relationship to be out in the open. Therefore, a black and white filter is conventional to the indie genre, as it creates a rustic look and also conveys the frame as old and in the past which is useful for showing memories. 

Last but not least, the editing style; fade will be used in our music video. A fade is a simple transition style used in the editing process and it is usually used at the end of a film or video. A fade to black will be used in our music video at the end of the music video which will show the artist putting away the photographs of her and her partners memories. The use of this fade transition between the shots is to make the video flow and give it more sense, so that the audience know whats going on clearly. Also, the fade to black at the end of the music video will clearly state to the audience that is the end of the music video, However it could also portray the end of the relationship that the artist was in. Due to the connotations of black being enigma and enigma, this could be applied to the music video as connoting that the relationship is still a mystery and the audience do not know whether its officially over or not as it leaves on a cliff hanger. Also, in reference to power, the fade to black could portray the artist as self controlling herself and taking power to the situation and implying that she's moving on since we see her put away the photographs during this editing style. This editing technique is conventional to the indie genre as it helps connect shots clearly and also it is used at the end of an indie music video to convey that it is the end of the narrative, giving the audience some clarification. The fade to black represents my artist as mysterious as it signs of the video and makes the audience want to find out more about her, since its ended on a cliff hanger through the fade. This representation intrigues the audience and grabs their attention to her as an artist which helps her build an audience since people would want to know more about her. 

Planning editing has been helpful in visualising the types of editing styles or transitions we will include in our music video. Also, it's made clear of the reasons why certain styles are being chosen and how they're conventional to the indie genre so that it is a successful video. In addition, it has allowed us to examine the representations and effects the editing styles have to portray the artist so that it gives the audience further understanding of the artist and how she feels within the narrative. Overall, I will look back at this post and see what editing styles I need to include in our music video and hope for it to help make our music video successfully conventional to the indie genre. 

Risk Assessment - Miss Miller*

A risk assessment is simply an examination of what in your production or work could cause to harm people or the workers. The purpose of a risk assessment is to iron out all the potential hazards and risks that could happen and what you could do to prevent it in order to work in a healthy and safe environment. In reference to my music video, the importance of a risk assessment will inform me and my group members what risks could occur whilst filming. It will provide us with the efficient knowledge or what hazards could happen and how we can prevent them. If we were not to have a risk assessment, me and my group would not be fully aware of the possible risks that could occur whilst filming our music video and we could be in danger or even gain an injury. Therefore, the risk assessment will outline the possible risks and how we prevent them which will make our filming more efficient. 

Above is a table that I created of Microsoft Word. The purpose of the table was to create a risk assessment for the filming of my music video. The layout was simple and there are 5 columns. The first column was where I put down the risks I could encounter whilst filming. Next to it was a column named " Who could be harmed", here I stated the specific participants that could get harmed at that particular risk. The third column stated the impact it could have on the participants and filming and the fourth column explained how I could manage the risk. Therefore illustrating how me and my group could prevent encountering the possible risks. Lastly, the fifth column is where I put down the back up plan for the prevention before, so that I will know what to do after if the first risk management was not effective. The table helped structure my plans as it gave me a step by step run through of highlighting the risks and how to prevent them from happening and overcome them. 

Overall, me and my group followed the risk assessment, as we believed it was beneficial when filming, increasing our safety. The role of the risk assessment informed us the risks that could happen whilst filming our music video, which alerted us when filming as we knew how to prevent them and what our back up plan was. For example, the risk of rain happened when we were filming at camden for a little while, and what we did to prevent it was just put an umbrella over the camera so that it wouldn't get damaged. In addition we made sure all team members and actors wore appropriate clothing to suit the weather that was occurring e.g coats and umbrellas. Therefore, this didn't affect our filming as we were still able to film the shots that we needed when it was raining slightly and also it portrayed realism of the setting because it wasn't artificial. Also, another risk we encountered was slipping on mud whilst filming the bonfire/fireworks and field scene when the artist is singing. We prevented this by checking the weather to see if it was raining on our filming days and if so, we made sure everyone wore appropriate footwear with grippy soles to the scenes so that no one would be harmed and hurt themselves whilst filming. A risk we came across whilst filming was from the smoke canisters. As stated in the risk assessment, the smoke canisters could harm the actors and videographer. When filming the smoke scene, with the first colour, we found that the smoke was hurting the actors eyes when we directly had the smoke placed where they were. Once we identified this problem, we immediately took the advice from the risk assessment of having a practice run of the smoke to see how it'll react like and figured out how the actors will be in it. The conclusion we came up with was by having someone hold the canister whilst the smoke is going and control the direction the smoke came out. Also by doing this there was minimal smoke that wasn't too heavy and the actors could successfully run through it and perform their actions in the smoke. In conclusion, my group did not encounter additional risks and those that did come up were stated in the risk assessment. Therefore our risk assessment was beneficial and effective as it prepared us for what risks could possibly happen and told us how to prevent them.

Frames 1 - 4 

Frames 5-8

A storyboard is a sequence of drawings, typically with directions and dialogue, which represents the shots planned for a film, television programme or in our case; a music video. When it comes to planning, storyboards are important because they are the best way to show your vision of the production that you are creating. The purpose of a group storyboard is that it allows all members to discuss, evaluate and put forward ideas to create an overall vision of their end product. Another purpose for creating a group storyboard is that it allows us to plan ahead what we are going to include in our music video in terms of the micro elements; cinematography, mise en scene, editing and style of video. If we were not to have a storyboard, it would be time consuming when it comes to actually filming our music video, as we wouldn't know what to do nor include when filming. Also, the editing process will be chaotic because we would be making up styles on the spot. Our storyboard will guide us on what to do and include within our music video, which will help make the process as successful and conventional to the indie genre possible. 

My group consists of myself, Rishika, Bettie and Jess. The storyboard made was for our chosen song 'Wings' by Birdy, which will be the song for our music video. 

Frames 9-12

Primary research is research carried out yourself for instance; questionnaire. Me and my group carried out a questionnaire for our music video and the indie genre to find out what the audience expect to see in an indie music video. Questions asked included; what setting do you expect in the indie genre, what type of instrument and camera shots etc. Most answers were conventional to the indie genre,and helped assist with our planning process for our music video for the song 'wings' by Birdy. We also carried out secondary research throughout the whole of the project, and this was through our blogs where we analysed and researched different genres, music videos, the indie genre and our artist to gain more understanding of what to include in our own video. With both our primary and secondary research, we have taken several inspirations from them and tried to incorporate them into our indie music video, so that our video will be as successful as possible in regards of the indie genre. 

Frames 13-15

The way me and my group storyboarded our music video, was through sheets of paper that showed drawings and descriptions of what was going to be included in each frame of our music video. This included; the micro elements, narrative description and duration of the frame. This gave us a clear image of what we were going to create and also acted as our guide when we were filming, as we would always look back on the storyboard to see what was next to film. The way we shared the responsibility of the storyboards, was that in class we all started on the first 3 frames together and discussed the overall narrative and how it'll be in greater depth. After this discussion, me and Rishika took responsibility to finish the rest of the storyboard off by halving the amount of sheets between us and communicating at home whilst home filling them out. Through our group chat, we discussed the inspirations that we all had and plotted these within our music video. Our ideas of what we would incorporate into our storyboard, primarily stemmed from our lyrics analysis annotations. 

An inspiration that we gained from our secondary and primary research was the use of an instrument especially a guitar. In our questionnaire, the majority said they expected to see an acoustic guitar within an indie music video and our secondary research into the artist, Birdy, we found that she played the piano in her music video 'Skinny Love'. This gave us the knowledge that indie artist tend to play an instrument within their music video and the instrument tends to be an acoustic guitar. This inspired us to include a guitar within our music video, and as seen in the storyboard, frame number 31, our artist will play a guitar whilst being in the field through the use of a long shot for 7 seconds. We believed this was appropriate to include in our music video as our research proved it to be conventional to the indie genre, as it allows the audience to know that the artist is not only vocally talented but instrumentally too. Also, the use of the artist playing in the field in particular, gives the impression that she is expressing herself to the audience in more depth as she is in an isolated place where she is seen to be 'free' and this implies that she is being herself. This builds a relationship between the artist and the audience, as they will feel the artist is being genuine and honest about what she's singing about but also they can empathise with her because she's allowing them in. Therefore, the use of the acoustic guitar in our music video is conventional to the indie genre and also helps builds an artist and audience relationship. 

Another inspiration that we got from our primary and secondary research was the use of close ups our music video. Our primary research; questionnaire results of 'what camera shots do you expect in an indie music video',had close ups as the overall answer. In addition, my secondary research of analysing Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness music video, she had close ups of her face and objects such as the shattering light bulb. The research inspired us to include close ups throughout our music video and examples of this are in the storyboard. For example a close up is used in frame 20 and this is accompanied with a zoom in. The close up establishes to the audience the narrative of the artist trying to hold her partners hand but then she moves away from the action. The close up highlights the fact that the lover does not want to be public with their relationship and show affection towards her. Therefore, the close up used is conventional to the indie genre, as it helps the audience establish the narrative through the purpose of a close up magnifying something. In our case it magnifies the struggle the artist is in, in relations to a complicated relationship. Another time were going to show a close up is when the artist is singing, for example frame 50 we see the artist singing through a close up the lyrics "For the rest of our lives". The purpose of the close up is to capture the artists emotions that she expresses through her facial expressions whilst singing of distress and sadness which further gives understanding of the narrative. The close up is conventional to the indie genre as it shows the artists facial expressions and also makes her the focal attention which appeals to the audience. Including close ups in our music video, does not only follow the indie conventions, but also Goodwin's theory of "record label including the need of lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work. We incorporated the theory by showing the artist throughout the music video in a close up. We followed this because we thought it'll be essential for the indie artist who is debuting to promote herself by showing her face frequently throughout. Also, the use of close ups helps build a relationship between the artist and audience, as it gives the impression of the artist allowing her audiences in because they see the emotions she is expressing. This may make the audience emphasise with what she is portraying or singing about in her music video, which will make them admire her as they feel she's being genuine and honest. Therefore following Goodwin's theory and a convention of the indie genre, as indie artists tend to be low key or unknown and need further promotion especially if they're debuting. 

Our next inspiration that we gained from our research was the use of the artist wearing casual clothing. This stemmed from our questionnaire question of 'what types of costume would you expect in an indie music video" and the majority said casual. Also, in our indie genre research we all found that indie artists such as Gabrielle Aplin, Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey had all worn a casual outfit within their video. So with the knowledge of indie artists wearing casual clothing, we wanted to incorporate this within our music video to show our narrative and include it in our storyboard. For example scenes such as the bedroom and fire works scene, our artist is wearing comfortable, casual clothing that suit the setting such as jumper and leggings or shirt and jeans. This is evident in frames 2-4 and 8-9 where we see the artist the outfits mentioned. The use of having the artist wear causal clothing is conventional to the indie genre, as it portrays her as normal and ordinary which makes the audience feel like she's one of them, which helps build a relationship between the two. Furthermore, the casual clothing portrays realism within the video, as they suggest the ordinariness of the artist is authentic and that she is truly showing herself in her natural form. This again is conventional to the indie genre, as artists in this genre rely on realism to convey their narratives or concepts as they tend to be about personal experiences or their life. So the use of having casual clothing accompanies this, as it shows that the artist is being real to her audience and makes her song more believable or understanding. 

The storyboard was helpful to our filming as it prompt us with the ideas and visuals of what we were going to film, making it our guide. This made sure that our filming process was less time consuming and more organised which decreased the level of chaos that would happen. Also, when filming we would always look back on our storyboard to refresh our minds of our music video outline, and this made sure that we didn't forget to include anything.

In summary, we have tried to follow our storyboard and some areas have been successful. For example the bonfire event scene, we did follow the storyboard and filmed what was said to be filmed in our storyboard in our music video. The shots, editing techniques are the same and also visuals. However, there were a few changes within frame 2, as we included fillers such as shots of the funfair rides at the event in between our shots. The reason why we did this was because we didn't know the event would include fun fair rides, and we thought it would help establish the setting that they're in, as well as portray the artist as youthful and innocent. Therefore, the fillers of the rides and fireworks served its purpose of portraying the artist and the narrative further e.g fireworks represent the excitement and sparks of the relationship. Also, we did follow our storyboard when it came to the bedroom scenes; artist looking at photographs and the couple on the bed. We incorporated our storyboard frames that we planned into our filming and captured the scenes in the shot said such as high angle shot of the couple laying down on the bed; frame 34.  

Lyrics Analysis - Miss Miller**

My group and I were given the task to analyse the lyrics of our chosen song, wings by Birdy. The purpose of analysis the lyrics were so that we could understand what the actual song was about and also figure out the hidden meanings or messages the artist is trying to put across. Also, analysing the lyrics for our chosen song will prompt us with ideas for our music video, as our analysis will tell us what each line means and how it portrays a certain image across. By analysing the lyrics for our song, this demonstrates certain planning techniques such as what mise en scene were going to include e.g low key lighting to accompany lyrics that suggest darkness; editing styles such as fast editing or slow editing to convey the mood of the lyrics and so on. Therefore this task will be helpful when planning our music video, as it'll help us visualise the lyrics and give us ideas on what to include in our video. 

The way in which my group annotated the lyrics, was that we organised each lyric that we thought belonged to either hidden messages, artist representation, mise en scene/ style of music video and target audience relationship through the use of different coloured highlighting. Yellow was hidden messages (messages that are not clearly apparent but are there when thought into depth), Orange was artist representation (how the lyrics represent the artist in relation to their feelings and emotions), mes/style of video ( what elements on mise en scene and style of video could be seen for the lyric) was green and target audience relationship (the relationship between the artist and the audience) was blue. This was helpful as we colourfully distinguished which lyrics belonged to what. 

There are a few hidden messages and meanings within the lyrics for Wings. The first two lines of the song are "Sunlight comes creeping in, Illuminates our skin". What we got from these two lines was an impression that the artist is thinking about someone important to her. Sunlight connotes pleasant memories, beautiful days and happiness, which could portray the artist as looking back into her past that was quite happy. The "sunlight comes creeping in" lyric could symbolise her thought process as it lighting up and processing her memories with her lover, however the creeping in could suggest that this thought is sad and the slowness represents her as grieving slightly but still see's the relationship in a good light. Sunlight has some negative connotations, as it may be seen as blinding and creating shadows which could imply that through the happiness of the memories there were some dark times or it could suggest that the artist is sad that it's not the same anymore in terms of contentment. This hidden message shows that the artist is in a vulnerable state and is looking back at her past, which the audience may relate to as they too may have experienced love loss or just looking back at good times. In terms of cinematography, with these lyrics I think we will consider including a high angle shot of the artist looking at the photographs of her and her partner whilst sitting on the floor. I believe the use of this shot will mirror the lyrics and suggest how the artist is thinking about her partner and that the sunlight creeping in could symbolise the memories that they had are in her thoughts. This implies that the artist is still in love with her partner and cherishes their memories whether good or bad and misses them since they're creeping in. Also, Illuminates our skin could be seen through the camera shot, as the shot will show her only from a high angle and could portray her in the spotlight, illuminating herself and highlighting the fact that she is looking at pictures of her and her partner. 

The line "So far from where we are" has the hidden message of the artist and her partner not being as good as they was before in their relationship. This suggests that they're are on some sort of rough patch and the relationship is not functioning properly or being the way its suppose to be. This is conventional to the indie genre, as themes of rocky relationships that are not functioning properly or there is some kind of obstacle within one is usually used in an indie music video. This is because artist tend to sing about their life experiences and whats happened to them, and relationships on bad terms tends to be a common theme as the target audience can relate to it because they may have experienced a bad relationship before. Therefore, building a relationship between the artist and audience as they may have something in common when it comes to relationships that are on the rocks. In reference to the music video style, especially narrative based, the lyrics could accompany with our narrative on showing the negative sides of the relationship as the artist partner does not want to be public with their relationship. This could be done through showing the artists partner moving her hands away from the artists hands when they are in public, which implies that she is not comfortable with being intimate in public. This could symbolise the lyrics "So far from where we are" by visually showing in our music video how they are still not content with their relationship and how there are still obstacles the artist has to face in order to get to where they should be with her partner. Therefore, the lyrics could be applied to our music video in relation of showing the narrative of conflict in the artists relationship.

Another hidden message is evident in the chorus "Oh lights go down, In the moment we're lost and found". The hidden message that we got from these lines is that the relationship that the artist was in, it was exciting and functioning when they were not in the spotlight. We got the impression of the relationship that the artist was in was only intimate in the dark and how the relationship was in secret especially through the lines "we're lost and found". In addition, it implies that even though they are not sure on where they are at within their relationship, they are still committed and happy to be in it even if they are confused about it. The audience can relate to this hidden message of unsureness but gratification as the target audience of 17 - 25 year olds are stereotyped to think they know everything, but they don't as they're still young and experiencing things. In reference to editing, we will be considering having a montage seen in the first chorus to these lyrics which will show the artist and her partner inside a tent play fighting and being mildly intimate e.g touching hands and staring into each others eyes. The montage will follow Goodwin's theory of lyrics matching visuals, as the visuals will convey the lyrics by conveying them being lost and hidden away in the tent, but they are found because they are being themselves and intimate in secrecy. Therefore portraying the artist as submissive, and weak because she's following her partners instructions of only showing affection in secrecy when no one is with them. This helps build a relationship with the audience and the artist, as the audience will feel sympathy towards the artist for her being weak in the relationship and not being able to have what she truly wants, which is a relationship out in the open. 

The codes and convention of having a relationship theme in an indie music video is evident through the lyrics "It made me think of you, It made me think of you". The hidden message from this is that the artist is missing someone and whenever she's doing normal regular things she thinks about that one person. The repetition emphasises how much she misses that person and gives the impression that she wants things to be how they were then. The lyrics are conventional to the indie genre as they portray the artist as missing someone which is a common theme in the genre as artists usually sing about love loss or relationships because its something personal to them. This could represent the artist as being lonely which builds a relationship between her and the audience, because they may sympathise or emphasise with her and feel like they know how she feels. To covey the loneliness in our music video with this lyrics, we are considering having the artist singing alone in an isolated place e.g field, to show how she is alone. Also, it'll emphasise the way the artist is expressing her feelings of missing someone and letting her audience in to her personal issue. 
Another codes and convention that will be evident in our music video, is the artist singing with a guitar. This will be seen with the the lyrics "Oh lights go down" and will show the artist playing the instrument whilst singing. The use of having a guitar is conventional to the indie genre, as artists within this genre usually have an instrument to help express their feelings and emotions of the song. Also the instrument being visible in the music video will help show the audience that the artist is not only vocally talented, but also instrumentally therefore sharing more knowledge about the artist. The iconography of a guitar reflects the lyrics as they suggest she's in the spotlight even though the lights are going down, which gives her the focal attention because they just see her playing the guitar. Also, the use of this follows Goodwin's theory of having visuals matching music as the guitar sounds will be heard through the music and also give the impression that the artist is playing the guitar live. This creates a sense of realism for the audience, as the music and visuals match which portray the artist as being genuine and honest because they see her playing a guitar whilst hearing it in the background. 
The third codes and convention that'll be used in our music video is the use of having real life settings in our music video. The lyrics "Under a trillion stars, We danced on top of cars"  will show the setting of the bonfire event that the girls are at in the music video. This setting is conventional to the indie genre, as artists within in the genre often portray themselves at public places that the audience can relate to. Also, the lyrics "Under a trillion stars" is symbolised through the fireworks display that the couple witnesses at the event and the fireworks connote the stars as both stars and fireworks are bright. Therefore this follows Goodwin's theory of the lyrics and visuals matching as the fireworks are symbolic for stars and the couple are below them, which visually shows the lyrics. Therefore, the convention of having a real life setting within our music video is conventional to the genre, as it helps the audience and artist connect and build a relationship with each other as they may relate to whats going on or gives them better understanding of the narrative. For example, the bonfire event is a vibrant, lively and fun scene which could portray the relationship in the narrative as happy in this moment which shows that this is a happy memory that the artist has with her partner.

The annotation of lyrics will assist me and my group in planning editing, specifically the lyrics "We watch the day go by". The hidden message behind this lyric could be that the artist is thinking about the past of her relationship. Daytime connotes happiness, freeness and life because everything is alive at this time of day, which could imply that the thoughts of the relationship that the artist is having are happy. In reference to editing, to convey this lyric in our music video we will have a time lapse of the clouds moving in the sky. This will follow Goodwin's theory of visuals and lyrics matching as the audience will be seeing the day actually go by through the time lapse. The time lapse of the clouds moving in the sky will connote how time flies by and will show how the relationship within our relationship has gone quick. However, the time lapse of the clouds could symbolise the happiness and fun in the relationship because of the connotations of peace and purity which could imply that the relationship is not perfect but it is raw. 

Annotating the lyrics for the song wings, will assist me and my group in planning cinematography, specifically through the lyrics "We'd remember tonight, for the rest of our lives". The lyrics itself conveys the hidden message of how the artist and the person who she was close to will remember the intimacy or experiences that they had together for the rest of their lives. "for the rest of our lives"  could connote how deep the relationship was between the two as they are willing to remember the moment 'forever' which implies that the whole relationship was a profound love which they won't forget. The way we will convey this hidden message in our narrative is by showing the couple hold hands and then drift away each other.  The camera shot that will be evident when this lyric is heard is a close up shot, which will show the artist and her partners hands slowly parting away each other. The shot implies that the relationship has ended as well as the narrative in our video which leaves it in a cliff hanger that makes the audience question if they have or have not broken up. However, the fact that the shot will start with them holding hands will convey the lyrics of them being involved in a profound love but parting away because of the complicatedness it brings to their lives. But the couple still appreciate the relationship and will still care for each other, therefore they'd remember the moment 'for the rest of their lives'. Close up shots are conventional in the indie genre, as they help establish the artists facial expressions or give emphasis to an object for further understanding of the narrative or concept being portrayed. 

Mise en scene will be crucial for when planning and making our music video. The annotations for the lyric will help assist my group in planning mise en scene, firstly setting and iconography. The lyrics "My words are leaving me, they caught an aeroplane" give the impression that the artist is lost for words and is distraught by the negativity within their relationship that she no longer has nothing to say. The fact that she uses a metaphor that suggests her words have caught on aeroplane emphasises how effected she is by this, due to aeroplanes being far up in the sky. In relation to our narrative, we will convey the lyrics through setting and iconography which will be the artist in her bedroom looking at old letters and photographs from her partner. The setting of a bedroom will exaggerate her emotions of being upset, as bedrooms are known for being a place of privacy and where everyone can be themselves because its their own personal space. The use of this setting will emphasise the lyrics as it shows the artist as emotional whilst looking at the letters and photographs which creates sympathy from the audience. Also it may build a relationship with the audience as they can emphasise with her if they have been through the experience of being so hurt that you have no words to say. The iconography of letters and photographs help illustrate the lyrics by showing her reaction to these objects as being sad. Also, letters are seen as a personal mean of communication as it consists of ones handwriting or typing to another which makes it seem more confidential. The photographs are there to show the memories that the artist and her partner had which also makes her reaction to seeing them seem as she is heart broken, because photographs capture moments that we cherish forever. The use of the bedroom and iconography; letters and photographs are conventional to the indie genre because a bedroom is a recognisable place which the audience can relate to and the iconography used are seen as sentimental and personal because they are items that can be kept forever. Therefore, both are conventional to the indie genre as they convey the artist in her comfortable setting but also show her emotions which indie artists tend to do in their music videos when singing about their personal life experiences. 
The second mise en scene element that the lyrics analysis will assist us with planning, is costume, hair and make up. The lyric in which this element will be seen is "Because I thought of you, Just From the thought of you" . These lyrics accompany the hidden message of the artist missing someone and their relationship. The repetition of thought of you emphasises how much she misses them and represents the artist as being so in love with the person because she repeats the lyrics of thinking about the person in all three verses. In relation to our music video, the costume of our artist which consists of an off white dress, denim jacket, tights and boots convey the lyrics. The off white dress connotes purity and innocence which could portray the artist as these connotations but also apply to the lyrics as she is expressing how she feels and that her thoughts of her partner are pure. Also, the white dress represents her vulnerability in the scene and connects with the lyrics as she is vulnerable when thinking about her partner. In addition, the blue denim jacket has connotations of tranquility and calmness however this could be seen as putting a front on through the denim as the texture is tough. The toughness of the denim jacket could reflect the lyrics if her trying to be strong enough to get over her partner, however she cannot full complete this task hence why she is thinking of her. Also, the black tights could convey the lyrics as black connotes darkness which could imply that the artist is in a dark place, and the fact she's thinking about her partner could suggest that she's her saviour. Moving onto hair and makeup, the hair will be wavy which could refer to the lyrics as the artist being not her self. The waves could connote her inconsistency and unsureness with where she's at, however reflects the lyrics of her always being sure about her partner which further shows her love. Lastly, her make up will be neutral but not too basic for example having contoured face, lipstick and dark eyeshadow. This will reflect the lyrics as it'll imply that the artist makes an effort to look good for the partner, therefore suggests this as she is saying she is thinking about her whilst looking quite made up. This is conventional to the indie genre, as it portrays the artist as being weary about her appearance to impress someone, which the audience can relate to if they've done the same, therefore following realism.
Furthermore, the third mise en scene; lighting and colour will convey the lyrics that were mentioned before "Under a trillion stars". Stars connote big change or turning point in a persons life and hope, which could reflect the lyrics by suggesting the hidden message of the artist waiting for a big change and is being optimistic about it. In reference to our music video, the lyrics as said before will be seen through the sparklers and setting. However, mise en scene lighting and colour is also evident in this scene of the bonfire event. For instance, the bright colours of the sparklers and fireworks could convey the lyrics by suggesting the relationship between the artist and her partner is profound and exciting due to the brightness. Also, the fact that they're under the stars following Goodwin's theory of visuals and lyrics matching, could imply that the theres hope for the relationship because of it being complicated as one doesn't want to be open about it. Alongside, colours the lyrics assisted us with planning the lighting for the bonfire scene. The lighting will be low key lighting as this shows the natural lighting of night time and shows the artist in a real life setting. The low key lighting is applied to the lyrics by conveying the characters literally being under the stars due to it being night time. Also, it helps convey the narrative of their relationship being in secrecy as they are seen through the low key lighting acting like they are together, which shows them intimately under the stars which are the fireworks. Therefore, the colour and lighting picked conveys the lyrics and gives the audience further understanding of the relationship in the narrative. 
Lastly, planning mise en scene body language, facial expressions and positioning is evident through the lyrics analysis. The lyrics that helped us plan our body language is "If these wings could fly". The hidden message that we got from this lyric was that the artist feels conditional in the relationship that she is in, and wishes that it could be as wonderful if only they had the strength. We stemmed this idea from a bird not being able to fly and not have the strength to because their wings may be damaged and thought this could symbolise what the artist is trying to say. In relation to planning body language in our music video, we thought by having a shot of dancers expressing struggle through their dancing will convey the lyrics perfectly. Therefore, the body language will be of the ballerina dancers seen through a silhouette effect could portray our narrative of the struggling relationship. We felt that this was conventional to the indie genre as artist tend to use a performance to further express themselves using an instrument, however we are going to challenge this by having dancing instead of an instrument to showcase this. The lyrics "Oh damn these walls, in the moment were ten feet tall" helped us plan facial expressions and positioning. The lyrics have the hidden message of the artist being frustrated with the complications of the relationship, and expressing how when they're in a happy moment they are untouchable. This is seen through the phrase "in the moment were ten feet tall", which the metaphor exaggerates her enthusiasm for the relationship when its good. In relation to facial expressions, this helped us decide that the artist within our music video should sing this line to the camera whilst being positioned in the middle. The facial expressions that will be seen whilst she is singing the lyrics will be a annoyed, frustrated look which will convey the narrative of the artist wanting to be open with the same sex relationship that she is in. Also, having the artist positioned in the middle will emphasise her expressions and make her the focal attention which could imply that she feels very strongly about what she is singing and wants everyone to know. The positioning of being in the middle is conventional to the indie genre, as artists tend to be unknown within the genre, therefore the positioning allows them to be the focal attention and also promote themselves to the wider audience.

Overall, the music video will be narrative based because of the hidden meanings we found from the lyrics analysis that helped prompt us with many ideas to create a narrative. However, there are lyrics that will be used to convey the performance side of our music video as seen above, because indie artists tend to be instrumentally talented as well. 

The relationship between the artist and audience is evident through the lyrics included within the song etc "Stories of all we did","Because I thought of you, Just from the thought of you" and "I just wanna be by your side". The first lyric of "stories of all we did" creates a relationship between the artist and audience as it conveys how the artist is memorising her relationship and is letting the audience into the memories through the narrative of the whole music video. Also, it makes the audience emphasise with the artist as the lyrics give the impression of the artist being lonely as she is talking about the past, meaning she's experiences a love loss. In addition, the lyric "Because I thought of you, Just from the thought of you" helps establish a relationship between the artist and audience, as it further conveys the concept of heart break and love loss that she's in, which the audience may relate to if they have experienced something similar. During these lyrics the artist will be sad and convey these emotions which will help further gain sympathy from the audience and make them understand how she's feeling. Lastly, the lyric "I just wanna be by your side" again portrays the theme of missing someone and helps create a relationship with the audience.This is conventional to the indie genre, as artists often illustrate their emotions and feelings within the narrative or concept of the music video in a relatable way in order to create a relationship between them and the audience through realism. 

Analysing the lyrics for our chosen song, will help us plan our storyboard for our music video through the annotations made. The analysis has helped us establish the hidden meanings/messages of the songs for example missing someone, and also what is going to be included in each part of the lyrics. For example, the first verse will show the narrative element of the video of the artist looking at the memories through the photographs of the relationship and the second verse will showcase the happy memories that they had. Also, the performance elements will precisely be seen in the choruses of the song as these will make it look like the artist telling her story to the audience through her performances which are repeated in the chorus. In summary, the lyrics analysis will prompt us with specific ideas to include in our storyboard, so that we visually understand how our music video is going to look like.
